I'm directing this question to Navigator, but anyone else who knows feel free to chime in.
We watched Russia amass troops / supplies for quite some time prior to invading Ukraine.
How long before an invasion of Taiwan would we expect to see similar preparations by the Chinese?
The Russians had to move large quantities of supplies and ammunition into Belorus to be ready. They did not have supply and ammunition dumps in this country beforehand. Also, they had to have the troops stationed in Belorus before they started moving the supplies/ammo in, so that they would have local protection against potential pre-emptive strikes by Ukrainians. This is why I think it took so long for the Russians to prepare.
The Chinese don't have the same worries. They already have ammo dumps and other supplies right where they need them on mainland China. They don't need to "protect" anything in the areas across from Taiwan, as there is obviously no overland path.
However, the Chinese will need to move masses of troops into staging areas before they are ready to go. These are the areas around where they are building their new/expanded bases, and in the vicinity of ports where troops are debarked for sea movement to Taiwan and its outer islands.
If the Chinese are to go in April, I would expect this to happen about a month out.
My guess right now is that the Chinese are planning for October.
They will want the US to commit a lot of its ground forces to Europe so that there are fewer forces available to reinforce Asia.
