Russia-Ukraine latest news: Kremlin resorts to retired troops for eastern attack amid 'mounting losses'
Russia has been forced to draft in retired troops to bolster depleting ranks ahead of a fresh offensive in eastern Ukraine, British intelligence officials have warned.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that the Kremlin was recruiting personnel discharged from military service since 2012, "in response to mounting losses" during its invasion so far.

Russian forces have retreated from northern areas surrounding the capital Kyiv and are now regrouping in the east, with assaults focused on the Donbas region and Black Sea ports.

The MoD said Moscow's attempts to shore up troop numbers include trying to recruit from the unrecognised post-Soviet Transnistria region of Moldova.

It comes as a grave with dozens of Ukrainians civilians has been found in Buzova village near Kyiv, with the number of dead in a ditch near a petrol station yet to be confirmed.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia's use of force is "a catastrophe that will inevitably hit everyone... the whole European project is a target for Russia".

Russian soldiers in Chernobyl 'picked up radioactive material with bare hands'
Russian soldiers who seized control of Chernobyl spread radioactive material around the plant, its staff have said, while one soldier even picked up a source of radiation with his bare hands.

Employees at the power plant have described how Russian soldiers, who seized the plant for a month in late February, may have been exposed to potentially harmful doses of radiation.

This brings a high risk of cancer and other health issues, even decades later. One soldier is already reported to have died.

Drone footage released by the Ukrainian military revealed that the soldiers dug trenches in the nearby Red Forest, to this day one of the most radioactive places on earth at the site of one of the world's worst nuclear disasters.

Massive riots and grocery store looting in Shanghai as the population revolts against the draconian Covid lockdown that has prevented people from getting food.

Another disastrous CCP policy.

BTW, the real estate and shadow banking bubble in China hasn't gone away while we have become fixated on the Ukraine war.

World finances, not just Russia's, are in an ever precarious state.
I've seen speculation that shutting down their coastal exporting hubs is somewhat of a tactical move. Although it will harm themselves, they're prepared to deal with the ramifications. The trouble it brings to importing nations will be a greater harm. Could these "shutdowns" be purposeful?
It's sad to see everything falling apart so quickly. Sanctions against Russia are damaging everyone else equally if not more so.

Considering the massive losses the Russians have suffered, this is the only way to go forward. Conscripts are cannon fodder, and special forces require extensive training. A big downside to recalling former troops is that they may be physically unfit for duty. (Not that that would stop the Russian army from sending these guys into the Ukrainian meat grinder.)

Losses among special forces troops is said to be huge; catastrophically so.

The only thing Russia has left to fight with now is heavy artillery and nuclear weapons.

A shock to the system is the only way Big pharma and manufacturing will return stateside. Might as well start now.

Duterte has been an unmitigated disaster for the Philippines.

If the country had remained a US air force and naval base, none of this would ever have happened.
I'm probably more familiar with Duterte than anybody else on this forum. His China policy is not incompetence; it's intentional sabotage.

He started his political career as a member of the Kabataang Makabayan, an underground Maoist student organization. His mentor was Jose Maria Sison, the founder of the pro-CCP Communist Party of the Philippines. He still identifies as a "socialist" to this day. He has repeatedly threatened to switch sides in the Sino-American Cold War, and the only reason he hasn't already done so is because the Filipino military is very anti-China and would probably launch a coup if he tried to do it.

And on a side note he apparently has Chinese ancestry on his mother's side, which may or may not also play a role in his overt Sinophilia.

Any questions?

Given how much the Philippine and Chinese people hate each other, how
did Duterte get elected?

Because he campaigned a a populist, not a left-wing ideologue. He did a very good job at masking what I strongly suspect are his true political leanings.
