In a phone call on Friday between Duterte and Xi Jinping, Duterte continued his policy of appeasing China, while Xi promised to invest more money in the Philippines. However, Duterte's term as president will end in June, and a new president may or may not continue the policy of appeasing China.
Duterte has been an unmitigated disaster for the Philippines.

If the country had remained a US air force and naval base, none of this would ever have happened.
Just wait for Bongbong Marcos. Sadly he inherited none of his father’s intellect. He’ll likely continue to appease.

From the Daily Telegraph
Russia-Ukraine latest news: Kremlin resorts to retired troops for eastern attack amid 'mounting losses'
Russia has been forced to draft in retired troops to bolster depleting ranks ahead of a fresh offensive in eastern Ukraine, British intelligence officials have warned.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that the Kremlin was recruiting personnel discharged from military service since 2012, "in response to mounting losses" during its invasion so far.

Russian forces have retreated from northern areas surrounding the capital Kyiv and are now regrouping in the east, with assaults focused on the Donbas region and Black Sea ports.

The MoD said Moscow's attempts to shore up troop numbers include trying to recruit from the unrecognised post-Soviet Transnistria region of Moldova.

It comes as a grave with dozens of Ukrainians civilians has been found in Buzova village near Kyiv, with the number of dead in a ditch near a petrol station yet to be confirmed.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia's use of force is "a catastrophe that will inevitably hit everyone... the whole European project is a target for Russia".
Considering the massive losses the Russians have suffered, this is the only way to go forward. Conscripts are cannon fodder, and special forces require extensive training. A big downside to recalling former troops is that they may be physically unfit for duty. (Not that that would stop the Russian army from sending these guys into the Ukrainian meat grinder.)

Losses among special forces troops is said to be huge; catastrophically so.

The only thing Russia has left to fight with now is heavy artillery and nuclear weapons.
This “incursion” into Ukraine has revealed just how hollow the Russian military is. At what point does Russia fall from international opinion to the borderline 3rd world country it is? I cannot imagine anyone will feel threatened by them anymore, outside of the nuclear threat.

Given how much the Philippine and Chinese people hate each other, how
did Duterte get elected?
From relatives in the Philippines - he got elected because people were sick and tired of the corruption of the Filipino government, politicians, and military leaders, as well as their profiting from drugs. Seeing a guy willing to kill them was appealing because at least someone was challenging the status who. It’s hard to fathom the insane levels of corruption, but here is a story from 1991 when Mt. Pinatubo erupted:

My father-in-law was a practicing MD working in the area. He witnessed provincial government and military leaders stealing anything and everything donated from international organizations and governments: medicine, supplies, food and even blankets. These people had no need for these supplies, they’re just extremely greedy and corrupt. My father-in-law reported what he saw to his superior (naive on my father-in-law’s part) who pulled him aside and warned him that he and his family would end up disappearing if he tried to pursue this. Furthermore, the superior told my father-in-law to also steal from the donated aid supplies as a way to be complicit and somehow prove he would no squeal - this was a major turning point for him and reason he decided to leave the Philippines for the US.

Also, my wife’s family has had members disappear for supporting the wrong politics. My father-in-law was one of the people who initially supported Duterte, because he saw people who had screwed the population over getting called out and killed, and it satisfied him to see any kind of justice brought against these thieves. Now, he realizes how terrible Duterte has been, but hindsight is 20/20 and he acknowledges getting swept up in the want for corruption to end.

Russia is half way to being the next Pakistan.

That’s a good comparison. I wonder how much the rural folk and non Slav Russians will take before things start to splinter. Russia has had two historic breakups, the October and February revolutions and the dissolving of the Soviet Union - but they’ve been shrinking ever since Russo-Japanese war. Regions like Chechnya and Tartarstan come to mind immediately given their attempts for independence in the past.

Maybe the Russians have been reading this site. Putin is reportedly planning a series of domestic terror bombings to "trigger" the Russian population to support a mass mobilization and a much wider war. Navigator's ideas are about to be put into play.
Osechkin said: “Our source, nicknamed Wind of Change…. appealed in this letter to all Russians and to his colleagues in the Federal Security Service [FSB], especially in border regions like Crimea and Belgorod.

“He asked to pay maximum attention to information about a series of terrorist attacks being prepared against the people of Russia.

“Possible targets are high-rise blocks of flats [to maximise the number of casualties].

“These attacks will be blamed on Ukrainian sabotage to raise the degree of negativity, hatred and militaristic mood.

“This will make it easier to mobilise servicemen, both conscripts and reservists, even possibly some Cossack troops.”

Osechkin claimed it was now obvious that there was a large-scale mutiny among Russian forces with “a huge number of …different troops refusing to go to Ukraine to fight.

“It is to break this trend negatively impacting on Putin and the Defence Ministry that this kind of distraction is organised.”
This point is also interesting, if true.
The source said that the V and Z symbols “represent fascism” in the way that the swastika represented Hitler’s Germany.
Z-DAY Symbols reveal Putin’s ‘plan to kill hundreds of civilians and blame Ukraine to spark all-out war’, claims whistleblower
