If we are so concerned about Ukraine, why didn’t we ever allow them into NATO? We teased them for years but never followed through. If we had, then we’d be obligated to help them now and wouldn’t be having this debate. We were cruel to them then, and we’re being cruel now, giving them enough to continue piling up dead bodies but not enough to end the conflict. We should either urge them to negotiate peace, or have a real debate and a formal declaration of war to defeat the Russians, and accept the consequences for whichever path we take. This proxy war BS is evil, and wrong.
Ukraine didn't meet the requirements especially due to the unsettled status of Crimea. There would have needed to be waivers which would have required unanimous approval of all members. Very unlikely.

Ukraine is the proper party to decide when and if negotiations are in order. If you're worried about the numbers of dead, perhaps you should be directing your attention to Russia which can stop the war any time it wants by removing its forces from Ukraine. I don't accept your premise that US/Western support for Ukraine will lead to WW III. I only people I do see making that suggestion with any regularity are the Russians themselves...
This conflict represents the beginning of civilizational conflict later to be labeled WW3 perhaps. Or maybe the end of something, hopefully not extinction level. But with warmongering neocons and their lackeys teaming up with (pro)regressives, it might very be. Cheerleaders of doom

Well, a lot of Russians must be infiltrating North Carolina because where I live that suggestion is the norm, though I do also talk with people who see things as you do. The western world ensured we could not be part of a negotiated settlement when we moved so quickly to "cancel" Russia, which seems to have backfired spectacularly. It's going to be a long, cold winter...

I pray you are correct about this not being the start of WWIII, but with so many developed countries lurching into Generational Crisis Eras I fear you are not.

US giving tacit permission for Ukraine to fire missiles into Crimea, territory we let Russia take 8 years ago with nary a fuss. Is this escalation, or are we trying to right past wrongs? 8 years seems like a lot of time to let pass without doing anything. It also changes our posture from providing defensive support to offensive. Thoughts, anyone?

About 100 or so fires, etc., at food processing plants in the last 12 months in the US. Several at fuel processing plants. Government-induced inflation and environmental policies that make it harder and more expensive to produce/distribute food. Baby formula shortage. Covid vaccines that affect menstruation in women, sperm counts in men, and cause various dangerous side effects. Our actions vis a vis Ukraine/Russia that reduce the west's food/fuel supply. If anything else happens I may stop believing in coincidences.

That's just the beginning of a long list. It seems society is fractured between those who will and those who will not believe obvious and terrible lies that are shoved down their throats, and nobody seems to know the difference between right and wrong. I fear we ain't seen nothing yet because most carry as though it will get better as it gets worse.

Logistics and Corruption
I saw this coming decades ago and it confirms what I advocated as a planner: the Achilles heel of the Russian Military – Logistics and Corruption. When I talked to Soviet and Warsaw Pact soldiers back in the day; I was taken aback and amazed. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the US hosted Russian officers. Most were preoccupied with getting to the Post Exchange to get their hands on cartons of Marlboros, and Levi 501 jeans and were amazed at how cheap vodka was compared to our wages. One was a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan War (I think he was GRU Spetsnaz by his cold comments) and was flabbergasted with the readiness rates of our weapon systems and “lavish” or “gluttonous” amounts of ammunition that we burned during training and was appalled of the US Army trusting sergeants and corporals to make tactical decisions that were explained to me was the realm of officers. Later I saw this when reading between the lines of reports of their military in Georgia and Syria.
When calls of men are being made of the individual republics to form BTGs in the Duma and Russian proxies are being equipped with Mosin Nagants that I got off the battlefield In Afghanistan, the handwriting is on the wall for the Russian Forces. All Ukraine has to do is not to lose; they do not have to win, just bleed the Russians white.
It was suggested that this war will become “frozen” and I give it a 40 to 50% chance of happening or higher odds that the Russians fold as they did during WWI: “Ukraine is likely going to end in very Russian way. It’s starting to look like the armies of Vladimir Putin will go home on foot, leaving a lot of equipment behind. Why? They are facing a logistics collapse like that seen by the armies of the Tzar in 1917, after the Summer offensive.”
