One aspect of S&H which nobody much touches here is how generations create the next few generations. Each of the four personality stereotypes generates a certain child rearing style, and this affects the personality of the resultant generations. For example, they portrayed the idealists of the awakening as being so caught up in the new ideals that they unintentionally built up a resentment of idealism in the next unraveling generation. This didn’t interest me, or generally most, so it has been greatly neglected. If you somehow managed to miss this…Cool Breeze wrote: ↑Thu Jan 05, 2023 3:41 pmAm I missing anything? Or did they just rip off your work entirely and try to charlatan 20 more years out of it until the time came (about now)?
My own addition was that the solution of the crisis results in new values incorporating the lessons learned in winning the crisis. You learn from the crisis problems. Thus, after noble privilege you value equality. After slavery you value freedom. After economic collapse you value regulation of the economy. After fascist attempts at conquest you value containment. Basically, the cycles are spirals not circles, with lessons learned in each crisis contributing to values. Strauss came to acknowledge this at Nashville, but could not bring himself to celebrate the growth in values coming from each crisis. That was too (shudder) progressive. This suggested his theory was about how and why progressives always win the crisis heart.
That is where I disagree most with John. While he sometimes on other forums has claimed to be a great champion of S&H, he has to not understand the crisis issues or that crises result in values to prevent the conflict from repeating. He does not want to acknowledge that the progressives win each crisis and that the lessons learned become part of American values. There is great significance in the never again phase. You don’t let the crisis problems come up again. You persecute a president who doesn’t respect the law. You put emphasis on NATO and similar alliances. You clean up the voting procedures to make the next insurrection more difficult. You make sure you yourself can manufacture the truly necessary things.
It has already started to happen. You’ll see if you are looking.
