From the standpoint of scientific objectivity, Vallee asked himself, “What revelation could have so shaken these men? Perhaps it was a confrontation with the nature of a phenomenon that transcends our reality and our highest beliefs.” [Ibid] Consider, in light of this, the horrors that most people no longer recognize; horrors that surround us on every side: Men changing into women, women changing into men, mass shootings and assassinations, millions upon millions of aborted babies; marriage as a contract no longer enforceable, the courts corrupted, a global economy built upon massive debt.
At the same time, Berlin and Paris have been thoroughly polluted with socialist nihilism, weakened by years of trade with Russia and China. Even the British Prime Minister is considered by many to be a communist. He apparently supports a policy of jailing of British citizens who speak out against the flooding of the United Kingdom with Muslims. The British public is fed-up with this kind of leadership and will begin a largescale protest on Saturday. In France the government is in crisis. In Japan the Prime Minister has resigned. In America, Charlie Kirk was assassinated in an act of political violence that was carried out by a leftist fanatic. We are teetering on the brink of an abyss. Meanwhile, the Eurasian Empire is testing NATO’s defenses with drone operations over Poland (a NATO country). Alexander Dugin is rubbing his hands, smiling. His Dark Enlightenment protocol is succeeding.
What is the magic formula for triggering a civil war in America? There was a poll in which 55 percent of Democrats agreed that assassinating Trump would be justified. America has been internally divided. Confusion reigns amid false narratives. Writers like Nick Land and Curtis Yarvin have reaped a rich harvest among those who are frustrated by the left’s victorious march through the institutions. Who will counteract the madness of the Woke Zombie Apocalypse? Perhaps the enemies of woke are also being zombified (as another iteration of the same disease).
Open violence against people who disagree with leftist “values” is accelerating. The arsonist “uprising” of 2020, after the death of George Floyd, is still celebrated by the left. They want to eliminate the police, open the prisons, and flood the country with criminals and illegal aliens. Some on the left have been gracious enough to denounce the assassination of Charlie Kirk. But the left’s rhetoric against conservatives has often contained subtle incitements to violence; that is, likening conservative spokesmen to Hitler, calling them racist. How are they able to get away with such an outrageous calumny? Many on the left claim to be oppressed, to be victims of an evil system which the conservatives have long represented. They claim that they have been robbed of a place in the sun that would otherwise be theirs. They say, under their breath, that conservatives are fascists.
Look East and you will see who benefits from this. The Kremlin has always backed this spirit of rebellion, and now, through Dugin, the Russian power incites the West’s counterrevolutionary element. It is the old game of the agent provocateur. Rather than a simple commitment to God, family, and country, we find on the right a tendency to conspiracy theory. Mattias Desmet’s book, The Psychology of Totalitarianism, blames the mechanistic mindset of an atomized society for the rise of totalitarian creeds and conspiracism. Everything here leads to the revolt of the masses and the formation of masses. Here we find the negation of the intelligent ten percent who would otherwise form society’s natural leaders. The worst people now claim leadership as a right.
When a mass formation reaches 30 percent, it drives out the prudent ten percent. Politics then degenerates into gangsterism and unspeakable horrors. The masses are rabble. They have no moral compass, and will believe the craziest ideas. They will follow degenerates, as history shows. In fact, many of our college professors today are degenerates; and there are masses within MAGA who are degenerates. Here is our Scylla, and there is our Charybdis.
In his book, Revolt of the Masses, Jose Ortega y Gasset wrote, “When the mass acts on its own, it does so only in one way, for it has no other; it lynches.” He added that it was no accident that lynch law comes from America, “for America is, in a fashion, the paradise of the masses. And it will cause less surprise … when the masses triumph, that violence should triumph and be made the one ratio, the one doctrine.” [p. 218]
All that we saw in the 1960s, with the left’s campus uprisings, is now being repeated on a massive scale. The universities have been conquered. Now they are coming for the rest of the country. What we have, in essence, is a continuous empowerment of inferior elements, of the envious and those who possess neither nobility of mind nor purity of heart. The rabble always misunderstand what nobility is. They have created a false nobility on the basis of anti-racism and political correctness. This new nobility is, in fact, anti-noble.
Are we headed for our own version of the Spanish Civil War? In Spain, in the 1930s, violence was imbedded in the national rhetoric; and we see this same violence in the rhetoric of American politics today. Six years before the Spanish Civil War, Ortega wrote,
“When a reality of human existence has completed its historic course, has been shipwrecked and lies dead, the waves throw it up on the shores of rhetoric, where the corpse remains for a long time. Rhetoric is the cemetery of human realities, or at any rate a Home for the Aged.”
That crowbar-work is going to require a little more discussion of the failings of Marxism, and in particular of its insistence on a wholly collective view of morality. You can see that view at work even in those milquetoast versions of Marxism that are common fare nowadays in European social democracies. In some European countries right now, for example, a woman who is raped by an immigrant faces more serious legal consequences if she mentions her rapist’s nationality on social media than the rapist will ever face for his crime. Why? Because within the worldview that governs these nations at the moment, individuals and their actions are irrelevant. All that matters is which group they belong to, because only groups have moral standing in Marxist thought; individuals do not, and therefore the severity of a crime—and even whether an act is a crime or not—depends entirely on the groups to which criminal and victim are assigned.
In classic Marxism, the groups that mattered were social classes, and in that scheme, the ruling class was by definition evil and the proletariat class was by definition good. That meant—and yes, you can find this in Marxist literature—that when Tsar Alexander II abolished serfdom in the Russian empire, that was an evil act, since by definition the ruling class can only do evil. It also meant—and you can also find this in Marxist literature—that when Communists commit mass murder, that’s a virtuous act, since the crimes were committed by the proletariat, and since the proletariat can do no wrong, the victims must have deserved it.
In the wake of the New Left of the 1960s, which established the theories that today’s leftist parties generally follow, the rhetoric of class was replaced by that of race and gender but the insistence on collective morality (and thus of collective guilt and punishment) remains fixed in place. It’s the same logic that was used to justify the massacre of Jews in the Middle Ages—a few Jews more than a millennium earlier played a role in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, therefore all Jews everywhere were held to be guilty of deicide—and it’s just as brutal and stupid now as it was back then. Now as then, it’s a convenient bit of ideology if one happens to want to justify atrocities, and of course that’s exactly why it’s so popular.
This is highly relevant to our present conversation because the concept of the Spectacle, the aspect of Situationism that we’ll focus on in this week’s essay, is inevitably presented by Situationist authors within the framework of Marxist theory. Thus there is only one Spectacle, it’s a monolithic evil presence, it bears down on the proletariat with crushing weight, and it’s all manufactured by the bourgeoisie for the benefit of the ruling class. Read Guy Debord’s La Société du Spectacle or its English translation The Society of the Spectacle—and I strongly recommend that anyone interested in these ideas should buy a copy and do exactly that—and you’ll find everything in the book resting on that set of unquestioned assumptions.

This is ironically where another idea widely popular among today’s leftists, the concept of intersectionality, has a great deal to offer. The core principle of intersectionality is that your privilege in society, or lack of same, is not a product of class alone, or sex alone, or race alone, or ethnic background alone, or any other single factor. It’s the product of all these factors and many others, all intersecting to produce a complex texture of privilege. It’s a useful insight, though these days it’s too often been twisted into a justification for what gets dourly called the Oppression Olympics, the no-holds-barred struggle to claim the status of Most Oppressed Person Evah (a status, please note, that grants its holder considerable privilege in some contexts, such as American universities).
A large part of the reason so many people fell for the COVID fraud and gave into panic so quickly probably is related to what they have seen in fiction. How many movies, TV shows, etc. have a story about a virus killing almost everyone who catches it?Here a concrete example will do much more than any amount of abstraction, so let’s imagine a couple sitting in their living room watching a sitcom on television. They may be sitting side by side on the sofa, but their interactions with each other will by and large be limited to whatever won’t distract them from the program. During the time they spend staring at the screen, they experience a world of fictitious images, full of people and places who don’t exist. At intervals the sitcom is broken off to make way for an even more fictitious world in which various consumer products pretend to satisfy this or that human desire, where everyone tipping back a beer in the bar is young, well-dressed, happy, and laughing, and where asking your doctor about the latest pharmaceutical will surely cure you of an illness you don’t know you have.
Now imagine the couple getting up and going to the kitchen table to have dinner—we’ll assume they’re unfashionable enough to do this, instead of simply gobbling down their food in the living room while the television drones on. Even when they’re not watching the screen, the images that played in front of their eyes retain their presence and power. That’s not accidental, of course. Huge corporations fork over millions of dollars to cover the considerable costs of producing those images and getting them onto the screens, and I trust none of my readers are so clueless as to think they have altruistic reasons for doing so. Quite the contrary, that money gets forked over because those images shape human thoughts, feelings, and actions.
Human beings are social primates, after all, and to a very great extent they follow the familiar rule of “monkey see, monkey do.” The behavior of characters in a sitcom, or actors in an advertisement, or talking heads on a news-and-views show, becomes part of the mental world, and thus the behavioral world, of the people who watch it. Thus our couple, as they have dinner and talk, are as likely as not to regurgitate thoughts suggested to them by their years of watching television, and the actions they take will be shaped by the same source.

Young adults in the United States are dying at significantly higher rates than their counterparts in other wealthy nations, according to a sweeping new analysis published in JAMA Health Forum and highlighted by Slate this August.
