I expect I'll be hearing about blood rubies shortly, as Burma does supply gems to the international markets.
Can there really be that many Chinese tourists buying baby formula in Australia? It seems incredible.
Looking at Stoller's column on the bill, some is understandable, most isn't.
The railroad item is fairly perennial, as a matter of fairness to the railroads, since they get doubly disadvantaged vs the trucking firms. First, taxpayers pay for all the roads used by trucks, and trucks are assessed far less than the damage they cause and second, the railroad retirement fund is a burden the trucking industry does not have to manage. This gets slipped in quietly and usually nobody notices. I wouldn't know about but an old retired railroad man used to talk to me about it.
The Hollywood thing - I dislike subsidies to business in general and never have understood why movie studios need special tax breaks, they coin money like casinos. That's another old one, though it gets different names every so often. IIRC, Reagan liked it.
The NASCAR thing is stupid. It is totally beloved across the South, meaning it's part of the bait to get the South on board. You don't vote against NASCAR and live, and this thing makes for more tracks. I do assure you, I've seen ads by Southern politicians bragging that they've taken action to increase NASCAR participation - meaning this kind of thing.
The mining safety thing -fairly ridiculous. But it's more bait for the South.
The rest of it is disgusting bank giveaways and subsidies to keep production out of the US. Taxpayers really need that. But the banks own both parties body and soul, so that's how it is.
