China is a dictatorship, their government does not care about the health of their "subjects".
China has just fired the first two shots in a trade war they are threatening, if the U.S. continues to oppose, by word and deed, China's desire to take by threat of military force, massive territories in Asia that up until now, have been parts of other countries, or international territories open to all countries equally.

corn after all of China's "low-tech" food scandals, including
poisoning almost the entire country's powdered milk supply with
melamine in 2008. Still, they have no choice but to come to grips
with genetically modified food soon, if they want to continue feeding
that large population.

This GMO propaganda by China is very similar to their repeated, on going calls, for the U.S. to stop militarizing space, while at the same time China is the only country both actively developing and actively, publicly testing space based weapons.
Of course one needs to be careful when discussing "militarization of space" because China and all the nuclear powers do not consider nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) designed solely for the purpose of attacking their enemies from space with the most devastating weapons known to man, to be "the militarization of space" based on various tortuous definitions of space weapons that find a way to exclude ICBMs from the definition.
But regardless if you include (ICBMs), or not, China is the country most aggressively building, deploying, and publicly testing military weapons that are space based and also weapons that are designed use space to attack enemy targets on the land and on sea. Micro Hunter-Killer satellites are just the most publicly, and dramatically tested of these weapons.
