Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQIAP aka AQAP) - a Sunni Islamist group seeking to form a Sunni Islamic Caliphate - are active against government strong holds. They have overrun a major city, including the Prison located there, and released their imprisoned Islamist comrades in Arms.

ISIS ( aka as ISIL, and as the Islamist State ) has fighters active in provinces previously known as AQUAP strongholds. Lahj province is near, and Northeast of the strategic straight that controls access to the Suez Canal, and also near, and northwest of the strategic port of Aden.

Houti rebels ( Shia Islamist Extremists loyal to the dictatorship of Iran ) have, in the last 24 hours, while being heavily bombed by Suadi Arabia and shelled by Egyptian warships, have overrun the strategic Aden Presedential Palace located on a hilltop overlooking the strategic port of Aden. The internationaly recognized President of Yemen had been hold up there, but he fled last week as rebel forces approached. Elite government troops, personally loyal to the man who was President of Yemen for 34 years fought on the side of the Houti rebels to take the the palace.
The current, internationally recognized President of Yemen, President Hadi, is a Sunni. The long time former President Saleh is a secular Shia of the same Sect ( Shia Zaydis aka Shia Fivers ) as are the Shia Islamist Extremist Houthi rebels, loyal to Iran.
