** 06-Jan-2021 World View: Hong Kong arrests dozens of pro-democracy activists, including American citizen
- From July, election poster by pro-democracy politicians
Joshua Wong and Lester Shum. They are now in jail for attempting to
"overthrow" the government.
Hong Kong's government on Wednesday arrested dozens of pro-democracy
activists and politicians, accusing them of trying to overthrow the
government by forming a political party last year to gain seats in
Hong Kong's Legislative Council (LegCo).
There could be a new diplomatic crisis because Hong Kong arrested an
American citizen, lawyer John Clancey, with the firm Ho Tse Wai &
Partners.
Antony Blinken, Biden's nomination for Secretary of State, tweeted the
following:
"The sweeping arrests of pro-democracy demonstrators
are an assault on those bravely advocating for universal
rights. The Biden-Harris administration will stand with the people
of Hong Kong and against Beijing’s crackdown on
democracy."

Arresting an American citizen is one more assertion by the Chinese
Communists that they are growing stronger and becoming the world
leader, displacing the United States, which is becoming weaker, in
their view. They are already gloating over last year's huge victory
-- spreading the Wuhan coronavirus to hundreds of countries while
lying and protecting themselves, with the result that they have the
virus under control, making China's the fastest growing major economy
in 2020, while everyone else is struggling.
They are also gloating over the fact that they abrogated their treaty
with Britain and took dictatorial control of Hong Kong, ignoring their
international commitments to maintain Hong Kong as a democracy until
2047. Once again, the West did nothing to stop them, giving the
Communists the opinion that the West is now so weak that the
Communists can do anything they want with impunity.
The Communists have arrested an American citizen, John Clancey, for
the first time. Perhaps the Communists will avoid a major new crisis
by freeing and deporting Clancy.
Or, speculating:
Perhaps the Communists will transfer him to the mainland and throw him
into a pit, and demand the freeing of Huawei's CEO Meng Wanzhou from
Canada, where she is awaiting possible extradition to the US. The
Communists have already arrested two Canadians in retaliation for Meng
Wanzhou, and it's possible that they will threaten the incoming Biden
adminitration to keep Clancy in a pit unless Biden agrees to free
Meng.
